BCH painting in Newport.jpg

Barbara Humphrey

Artist Statement.

I set out for the day, looking for something fascinating in the places I love. The rocky edges and sandy beaches along the coastline do dances at dawn. A sailboat becomes a paper lantern on still water at sunset. In the light, I find mystery or curiosity, and with that excitement I go to my studio. I look for something unusual in quotidian life.

Mixing my own hues, I think about what piqued my curiosity when looking at the scene, and I try to capture that on the canvas. In painting, a second thrill pushes me forward as I try to bring out the wonder I found at the scene and highlight it in color. Thinking about light and negative space, I create a language that replicates the beauty of Elephant Rock Beach or Sachuest Point for someone looking at the canvas.

After working in printmaking, monotypes, and watercolor, I’ve devoted my practice to oil painting. I seek to bring the fluidity I found with watercolor to oils.
